Messaging etiquette: how to actually get a reply
1 min read · Etiquette
Why some messages get replies and most don't — and how to be the first kind.
The difference between a reply and a ghost is usually the very first message.
Read their profile first. Reference something specific — a shared interest, their stated boundaries, a place in a photo. 'Hey' and 'nice pics' get ignored for a reason.
Match their stated wants. If they say 'couples only' or 'no single men for now,' respect it. Arguing with a boundary is an instant no.
Never send an unsolicited explicit photo. Ever. It's the fastest way to get blocked and reported. Ask, and wait for an enthusiastic yes.
Keep it warm and low-pressure. A curious, no-agenda opener ('Loved that you're into hiking — favorite trail?') beats anything transactional. One thoughtful message outperforms ten copy-pastes.
